THE CONTEST FOR THE BEST LITERARY TRANSLATION AWARD "DRAGI" 2026
IS NOW OPEN
This year, the priority genre is poetry and it involves translated poetry pieces (classic poems, poetry for children, drama written in verses etc.) published in the time period from July 1st 2024 until June 30th 2026 (contest scope of two years).
The award for the best translation in Macedonian language “Dragi” has been set up in order to celebrate the translation in Macedonia and highlight the importance of translation in our cultural space.
The published translated works must be translated from an original language and applicants may apply with books translated from modern languages and classic languages (Arabic, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit and Latin).
All publishing houses, civic associations and translators are eligible to apply. Evеry publishing house and civic association can apply with a maximum of 10 books, while every translator has the right to nominate a maximum of 3 books.
Contest applications will be accepted until July 1st 2026.
The nominated books can be published in physical form or digital editions and must have a CIP record from the National and University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" - Skopje.
Books published in physical (paper) form should be submitted in four copies to the address of the publishing house Antolog (Gjorgji Pulevski 29 - 1), and digital editions should be submitted via e-mail, to the address redakcija@antolog.mk.
All submitted translations will be evaluated by a three-member jury committee composed of translators, writers, literary critics and skilled literary translation adapters.
The award consists of a plaque, Dragi statuette and a monetary award consisting of 40.000 denars.
This year's edition of the "Dragi" award was realized by the publishing house "Antolog" with the support of the Ministry of Culture and in cooperation with the Faculty of Philology "Blaže Koneski" - Skopje.
The award for the best literary translation in Macedonian, was awarded to Lidija Tanuševska for her translation of the Polish book “Empusion” by Olga Tokarczuk, published in Macedonian by the publishing house Antolog. The jury committee consisted of: Anastasija Gjurcinova(chair), Ivan Šopov and Jana Mihajlovska (members). The international Dragi Award 2025 for the best translation of a Мacedonian written piece was awarded to Christina E. Kramer and Rawley Grau for the translation of "The Long Coming of the Fire” by Aco Šopov, from Macedonian to English.
The international “Dragi” award for the most significant translation from Macedonian into a foreign language takes into account various parameters of when a particular translation appears in another cultural environment. First and foremost, the level of the translation, the reputation of the original work, but also the topicality, reviews, influence, stimulating interest in the author, recognition, increasing intercultural dialogue, etc. This award provides a serious incentive for all literary translators from the Macedonian language to approach the translation of Macedonian literature with great care and to continuously decide on having the works of our authors included in the offer of publishing houses from Europe and the world.
The annual award for best literary translation in Мacedonian - Dragi was announced in 2022 with the first honorary recognition awarded to Dragi Mihajlovski (1951-2022), a Мacedonian writer, translator, essayist and professor. Besides his prose work, Mihajlovski has left a meaningful and eternal footstep in Macedonian culture with the translation of Shakespeare, Milton, Shelley, Blake, Eliot. and others. He has published several studies and essays about the theory of translation and his opinions about literary translation have also inspired students at the Faculty of Philology "Blaže Koneski" in Skopje, where he was a professor. His works have been significant to all who work with the study and practice of translation (translatology).
