THE CONTEST FOR THE BEST LITERARY TRANSLATION AWARD "DRAGI" 2025 IS NOW OPEN ЗА НАЈДОБАР ПРЕВОД „ДРАГИ“ 2025
The award for the best translation in Macedonian language “Dragi” has been set up in order to celebrate the translation in Macedonia and highlight the importance of translation in our cultural space.
For the award, applicants can apply with prose-form books translated in Macedonian and published in the period between July 1st 2024 and June 30th 2025.
The published translated works must be translated from an original language and applicants may apply with books translated from modern languages and classic languages (Arabic, Ancient Greek, Sanskrit and Latin).
Until last year - all literary genres were valid applicants for the award - prose, poetry, children’s literature and drama. From this year on, to achieve a more fair monitoring system, every year there will be a priority genre which will change every year. In 2025, the priority genre will be prose (fiction) accepting works such as novels, story collections, essays, diaries etc. Next year, the priority genre will be poetry - accepting translated works published in the period between July 1st 2024 and June 30th 2026. In 2027, children’s literature will overtake the priority genre accepting translated works such as storybooks, stories, poetry, children and young adult novels published in the period between July 1st 2024 and June 30th 2027. Finally in 2028, drama will be the genre in focus accepting enrolment from translated drama pieces published between July 1st 2024 and June 30th 2028.
All publishing houses, civic associations and translators are eligible to apply. Evеry publishing house and civic association can apply with a maximum of 5 books, while every translator has the right to nominate a maximum of 2 books.
Applications will be accepted until July 1st 2025.
The nominated books can be published in physical form or digital editions and must have a CIP record from the National and University Library "St. Kliment Ohridski" - Skopje.
Books published in physical (paper) form should be submitted in four copies to the address of the publishing house Antolog (Gjorgji Pulevski 29 - 1), and digital editions should be submitted via e-mail, to the address redakcija@antolog.mk.
All submitted translations will be evaluated by a three-member jury committee composed of translators, writers or literary critics.
The award consists of a plaque, Dragi statuette and a monetary award consisting of 40.000 denars.
This year's edition of the "Dragi" award was realized by the publishing house "Antolog" with the support of the Ministry of Culture and in cooperation with the Faculty of Philology "Blaže Koneski" - Skopje.
The annual Dragi award for the best Macedonian literary translation, in 2024 was awarded to Anastasija Gjurcinova for the translation of the Italian novel "La vita intima" by Niccolò Ammaniti published by AntologThe jury committee consisted of: Jana Mihajlovska, Zorica Nikolovska and Vladimir Jankovski. The international Dragi Award 2024 for the best translation of a Мacedonian written piece was awarded to Benjamin Langer (Germany) for the translation of the novel "Pirej" by Petre M. Andreevski into German.
The annual award for best literary translation in Мacedonian - Dragi was announced in 2022 with the first honorary recognition awarded to Dragi Mihajlovski (1951-2022), a Мacedonian writer, translator, essayist and professor. Besides his prose work, Mihajlovski has left a meaningful and eternal footstep in Macedonian culture with the translation of Shakespeare, Milton, Shelley, Blake, Eliot. and others. He has published several studies and essays about the theory of translation and his opinions about literary translation have also inspired students at the Faculty of Philology "Blaže Koneski" in Skopje, where he was a professor.
