Liliana Corobca
Liliana Corobca (Saseni, Moldova, 1975) is a Moldovan-Romanian writer, scholar, and researcher of censorship during the communist period. She graduated from the Faculty of Philology at Moldova State University and earned her PhD at the University of Bucharest with a dissertation entitled The Character in the Romanian Interwar Novel. From 2002 to 2011, she worked as a researcher at the G. Călinescu Institute of Literary History and Theory in Bucharest, and since 2014 she has been an expert on the Romanian exile at the Institute for the Investigation of Communist Crimes and the Memory of the Romanian Exile. She has received fellowships and artist residencies in Germany, Austria, France, and Poland.
She made her literary debut with the novel Negrissimo (2003), for which she received the Prometheus Award for debut writers from the magazine România literară and the Award for Best Prose Debut from the Writers’ Union of the Republic of Moldova. This was followed by the novels One Year in Paradise, Kinderland, The Story of Old Maids, The Censor’s Notebook, The End of the Road, Ladybird, and other works.
Her novel Kinderland has been translated into several languages and received the Radio România Cultural Award and the Crystal Award at the International Literary Festival Vilenica. In her work, Corobca frequently explores migration, abandoned childhood, historical memory, communism, censorship, and the consequences of political systems on individual lives. Alongside her literary work, she has written numerous scholarly and documentary works and edited important publications devoted to communism, exile, deportations, and censorship.

The family of Ana Blajinschi, a woman approaching ninety, decides to move her to a nursing home. One of her great-granddaughters is given the delicate task of visiting her and persuading her to accept the decision.
But the visit takes an unexpected turn. Ana begins telling the girl about the terrible period of her youth, when she was deported to the steppes of Kazakhstan. After the horrific journey, together with thousands of people crammed into freight wagons, she thought she would finally be able to surrender herself to love. But for Ana, another ten years of hardship followed—a life marked by war and hunger. Her faith in God and hope of survival gave her the strength to endure. Her great-grandmother unfolds her painful memories, occasionally warmed by rays of light, because “a story has power; a story drives away evil, but it also drives away death.” Based on true testimonies, Liliana Corobca’s novel is a journey through the darkness of harrowing events, in which only at the very last moment do we discover what lies at “the end of the road.”
