In 2022, the publishing house "Antolog" established the "Dragi" award for the best translation of literary text into Macedonian language. The first honorary mention was awarded to Dragi Mihajlovski, the writer, translator, essayist, and professor after whose name bears the prize. The award will annually evaluate the best works of Macedonian translators.
This year, 39 translators from 17 publishing houses and two private editions were nominated for the "Dragi" award. Among the nominees were translations from 15 languages. The committee, consisting of Jana Mihajlovska, Lidija Kapuševska-Drakulevska, and Milan Damjanoski, held several meetings, during which the five shortlisted translators were selected after several rounds.
The Faculty of Philology “Blaže Koneski” in Skopje this year becomes a partner of "Antolog" in organizing the award. For the organizer, this represents extremely important cooperation. Firstly, because Dragi Mihajlovski spent his entire professional career at this faculty, and secondly, because the role of the faculty in the development of literary translators cannot be compared with the role of any other institution in our country.
In addition to the main award, the committee and the organizer decided to introduce the International "Dragi" Award for the most outstanding book translation from Macedonian into a foreign language. Taking into account the level of translation, as well as other important parameters when a specific translation appears in another cultural environment (continued interest in the author, reviews, media publicity, recognition, increase in intercultural dialogue, etc.), this year the award goes to translator Alexandra Ioannidou from Greece for the translation of the book "My Husband" by Rumena Bužarovska into Greek, published by "Gutenberg" (Ρούμενα Μπουζάροφσκα, “Ο άντρας μου”, μετάφραση. Αλεξανδρα Ιωαννιδου). This marks the first translation of a Macedonian author into Greek with an indication that the original language is Macedonian.
The "Dragi" Award for the Best Translation into Macedonian language was established to valorize translation production in Macedonia, as well as to highlight the value and importance of translation for our cultural space.
The five finalists are:
- Anastasija Gjurčinova for the translation from Italian of "Five Short Novels and a Few Stories" by Natalia Ginzburg, published by "Artkonekt".
- Zlatko Panzov, for the translation from Hungarian of "Captivity" by György Spiró, published by "Artkonekt".
- Ivan Šopov for the translation from Croatian of "On the Edge of Reason" by Miroslav Krleža, published by "Begemot".
- Ljubica Arsovska for the translation from English of "Elizabeth Finch" by Julian Barnes, published by "Artkonekt".
- Nikola Gjelinčeski for the translation from Spanish of "Presongs of postspanish and other songs" by Jorge Enrique Adoum, published by "Alef Publications".
