Michal Viewegh (1962) is one of the most popular and best-selling contemporary Czech writers. He graduated in Czech language and pedagogy. As a novelist, playwright, screenwriter and author of short stories and columns, he writes with a lot of humor and original irony, achieving deep meanings. Since the end of the 1990s, he has published one book each spring. It has been translated into 25 languages. He is the winner of the "Jiri Orten" and "Magnesia litera" literature awards. His books have sold a million copies in the Czech Republic alone.
Raising girls in the Czech Republic

The young teacher Oskar is in a bad financial situation, so he accepts the offer from the millionaire Karl to give private lessons to his daughter. Beata is a beautiful and careful girl, who faces difficulties with the whole world, as well as with herself. The teacher's life turns into madness and madness, a hurricane of passion and flawless evasions between his lover, wife and nine-year-old daughter.
This novel can be read in at least four ways: as a suggestive story about the life tragedy of a twenty-year-old girl; as a witty satire of the then system of education in the Czech Republic; as "a book about writing books"; and finally as an ironic love story. One of the most successful novels of the 1990s, which has been translated into many languages, filmed and sold over 110,000 copies.
